What is the Acetaminophen assay used for?

Acetaminophen is more commonly known as paracetamol which is generally used as a pain-reliever. At therapeutic levels paracetamol does not normally produce any adverse effects, although long-term treatment and prolonged use can result in liver and kidney damage. If this is left untreated or in the event of an overdose, hepatic failure can occur, which can be fatal.  For more information on liver failure as the result of Acetaminophen, please click here [external link].

The Acetaminophen assay is used to determine if an overdose has taken place; to assess the risk of kidney and liver damage to the patient; and to evaluate the type of treatment the patient will require.
