Array for diagnosis of thyroid disorders The thyroid gland produces hormones that are essential for normal body metabolism, namely thyroxin (T4) to 99.9% and triiodohtyronine (T3) to 0.1%. Once released, T4 is easily converted into the more biologically active T3. Blood tests can assess whether the thyroid gland's hormone production is normal, overactive, or underactive. The production of these hormones is regulated by the brain through feedback mechanisms. Any disruption in this mechanism leads to thyroid disorders - hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism - an overactive thyroid gland - shows symptoms such as irritability, tachycardia, heat intolerance, increased sweating, constipation and weight loss. Hypothyroidism - an underactive thyroid - show symptoms such as weight gain, feeling cold, fatigue, and depression. Abnormal levels can also indicate a thyroid tumour. All analytes on the thyroid arrays can be measured simultaneously with one small sample using Biochip Array Technology.
