Tim Cogley Foundation and Randox Health partner with Liverpool universities to bring cardiac health awareness to the city

 An event on preventative healthcare and cardiac screening is being delivered in Liverpool this week by a wealth of world-leading industry and academic speakers.

Hosted by the sponsor of the Randox Health Grand National, in association with Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University and the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation, the event, entitled the Preventative Cardiac and Metabolic Health Seminar, runs on Wednesday 3rd April and is open to the public.

It follows a morning of engaging fitness programmes, including boxing, taekwondo and indoor cycling, for local pupils and teachers from across Merseyside and Cheshire. During these exercises, which will also include the opportunity to experience life as a jockey by having a go on a horse simulator, the children will also have some physiological measurements taken, including their heart rate.

Prevention is always better than cure”, says Managing Director Dr Peter FitzGerald. “Our aim is to empower people to take control of their health, to live longer and more healthy lives.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with Liverpool John Moores, Liverpool Hope and the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation ahead of the Randox Health Grand National. The world’s greatest race offers us the perfect platform to spread our message of preventative health, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge with the audiences at this exciting event.”

This is the third year that the educational event from Randox Health has been held in the city, and for the second time will be championed by Frank Cogley of the Tim Cardiac Screening Foundation, whose son suffered a fatal heart attack due to a genetic condition. Frank is now working to raise the profile of cardiac health checks for young people.

He commented;

“It’s been recently reported that at least 12 under-35s die from undiagnosed heart conditions every week in the UK. The current lack of routine screening of 18 to 40-year-olds leaves a gaping chasm in our healthcare provision.

“With our highly motivated partners, through events like this, we hope to redress this through lifestyle changes and preventative medical programmes.

 “The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation is committed to delivery positive, action-focused and life-changing programmes. I can’t imagine a legacy more in tune with the generous, kind and supportive person that was Tim.”

Tickets for the Randox Health seminar, which focuses on health screening and how the right approach can deliver significant benefits, are priced at £3 and are available at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/preventative-cardiac-and-metabolic-health-seminar-tickets-59041545853?aff=ebdshpsearchautocomplete

£2.27 of each ticket payment will go towards the ‘Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation’ charity. Each attendee at the event will also be entered into a raffle on the day, with the winning prize being general admission tickets for the Randox Health Grand National on Saturday 6th April.

Randox Health partners with Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation to offer free health checks in Wirral

Randox Health is today delighted to announce that it is partnering with the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation to offer free health checks for young adults across Wirral.

On 9th April 2017 Tim Cogley, an apparently fit and healthy 34-year-old, suffered a fatal heart attack whilst walking home after a night out with friends.  Despite showing no symptoms, Tim had a 75% cholesterol blockage of the left descending coronary artery. Since then his family have set up the Tim Cogley Foundation to help raise awareness of coronary heart screening in 18 to 39-year-olds.

Throughout November, the charity, in association with Randox Health, will offer free health checks, including heart screening, to men and women between the ages of 18 and 39 in Wirral.

Appointments will last around 15 minutes and will involve blood pressure testing, body composition analysis and blood sampling to test for glucose concentration (relating to diabetes risk), lipid profile results (including important Total Cholesterol: HDL Cholesterol ratios), and additional key biomarkers relevant to CVD risk, including kidney function tests.

Participants aged 25 or over will also be provided with a unique Cardiovascular Risk Score, which details your risk of experiencing a cardiac event over the next 10 years.

Frank Cogley, Tim’s father, said of the cardiac screening:

“There are many types of heart disease. The national media sadly, but regularly, report instances of young people suddenly dying, as in the case of our youngest son Tim, from undiagnosed heart disease. The current lack of routine screening of 18-39 year olds leaves a gaping chasm in our healthcare provision but with our highly motivated partner, Randox Health, we hope to redress this through lifestyle changes and preventative health programmes.

 “The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation is committed to delivering positive, action-focused and life-changing programmes.  The essence of the charity, and its whole approach of reaching out to help others, reflects Tim’s character and, in that sense, keeps alive his driving force. I can’t imagine a legacy more in tune with the generous, kind and supportive person that was Tim.”

 Dates for the screening are as follows:

  • Thursday, November 1 – 4pm to 8pm – Tesco, Telegraph Road, Heswall
  • Saturday, November 3 – 10am to 4pm – Tesco, Telegraph Road, Heswall
  • Tuesday, November 6 – 10am to 2pm – Warrens Medical Centre, Arrowe Park Road
  • Thursday, November 8 – 4pm to 8pm – UTS Foundation, Newhall Lane, Hoylake
  • Monday, November 12 – 10am to 2pm – Wirral Met 12 Quays Campus, Shore Road, Birkenhead
  • Wednesday, November 14 – 4pm to 8pm – Caldy Sports Club, Telegraph Road, Thurstaston
  • Saturday, November 17 – 10am to 2pm – Eastham Drop In Centre, 31 Eastham Rake
  • Tuesday, November 20 – 10am to 2pm – Warrens Medical Centre, Arrowe Park Road
  • Thursday, November 22 – 4pm to 8pm – UTS Foundation, Newhall Lane, Hoylake
  • Monday, November 26 – 10am to 2pm – Greasby Medical Centre, Greasby Road
  • Wednesday, November 28 – 4pm to 8pm – Drop In Centre, Victoria General Hospital, Marymount Close, Wallasey
  • Saturday, December 1 – 10am to 2pm – Wirral Met Oval Campus, Old Chester Road, Bebington

Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of Randox Health, commented:

“It is an honour to be partnering with Frank and the team at The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation to offer young people across Wirral and Merseyside the chance to avail of the advanced health screening we provide at Randox Health. We know all too well the benefit of prevention over cure, and you need look no further than Frank Cogley who is working tirelessly to turn his son’s tragic death into a force for good to see how important this is.  It is so encouraging therefore to see how popular this initiative has proven thus far, and we are now adding further screening slots to our clinic in Exchange Station to accommodate the high demand.”

Further screening will take place at the Randox Health Liverpool Clinic, Tithebarn Street, Liverpool L2 2QP, so if you would like to participate please visit www.timcogleyfoundation.com/cardiac-screening to read the pre-screening information, and then call Randox Health on 0151 665 0700 to book your appointment.

During the month of November Randox Health Liverpool will also be offering free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests in celebration of Movember, Men’s Health Month. Offering a pre-cursor to a physical examination, the Randox Health prostate health check can stratify patients who may need referred on for further testing.

Randox partners with Liverpool Guild of Students for their annual awards ceremony

Randox were proud to sponsor four awards at the Liverpool Guild of Students Awards 2018 which took place on Friday 27th April in the city’s Mountford Hall. Now in its tenth year, the prestigious occasion recognises individuals or groups who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help fellow students and the wider community while improving student experience at the University of Liverpool.

The ceremony was attended by 300 students nominated from Liverpool Guild of Student’s 22,000 student member body, along with key university staff members. Liverpool University is privileged to enjoy such a vibrant and active student culture in the city which made for tough competition in each of the awards categories.

The categories sponsored by Randox were in the Development category block;

Campaign of the Year – the Liverpool University Marine Biology Oceanography and Ecology Society won this award after they developed a campaign to reduce plastic impact on-campus as well as helping the general public to become more knowledgeable on the issue.

The Development Award – Congratulations to the Liverpool Paediatric Society who received this award. The society has fully committed to providing high quality academic, skills based sessions for their members. As well as fundraising for nominated charities throughout the year, they also provide excellent opportunities for members to learn new skills to help them both in their studies and future careers.

The Innovation Award – the National Hindu Students’ Forum Liverpool won the award for innovation after they built on the success of their previous committee members and raised over £400 for MIND by transforming a once small-scale event, Asha, into a large-scale event with stalls, raffles, performances and a three course meal.

The Challenge Award – the Feminist Society at the University of Liverpool has promoted inclusivity and broadened the reach of the Guild outside of the university campus. They have hosted a wide variety of fundraisers and club nights not only to raise funds for charities but also to educate attendees on sexual violence.

Dr. Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of Randox, commented on the sponsorship;

“Through our own world-leading research and development in the field of health diagnostics, we are making a difference both locally and worldwide to improve health and extend lives. Development is one of the most fundamental areas in the modern era as we move forward, break boundaries and expand in to new territories and technologies in health research and diagnostics.

“Our sponsorship of the Development category at the Liverpool Guild of Students Awards – the Campaign of the Year, Innovation, Challenge and Development awards – signals our commitment to the future of research and the importance of both new ideas and talent for the future of science and beyond.”

Glen Whitcroft, Media Sales Manager at the Liverpool Guild of Students, said;

“We were incredibly proud of the achievements of our students. The positive difference they have made to their campus and communities is immeasurable and having a world-leading company such as Randox recognising their hard work by sponsoring four of our awards at the Liverpool Student Guild last week was a privilege. Randox is a company well-known for its encouragement of young talent through its second-to-none placement and graduate opportunities in a variety of disciplines from science and technology to engineering, marketing and even graphic design. We’re delighted to partner with a company who places such value on the importance of student and graduate positions.”

Randox teams up with LJMU to offer students the chance to feel like a Grand National jockey

Liverpool’s reputation as one of the world’s greatest sporting cities is being pushed to the fore by an exciting collaboration between the new Grand National sponsors Randox Health, the prestigious Liverpool John Moore University (LJMU)’s School of Sports and Exercise Science, and the University of Liverpool’s Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital.

The event, known as Randox Health Week, is free and open to the public between Monday 3rd and Wednesday 5th April – the three days prior to the Randox Health Grand National.

Teaming up with a racing legend, Olympic athlete and boxing champion, three days of interactive sporting programmes will teach hundreds of local students about the importance of harnessing their health in order to achieve sporting excellence.

During each morning session of Randox Health Week, pupils and their teachers from across Merseyside and Cheshire, with the help of qualified coaches and sport scientists, will be put through professional fitness programmes, including combat sports such as boxing and taekwondo, and high interval training such as indoor cycling.  During these exercises, which will include the opportunity to experience life as a jockey by having a go on a horse simulator, the children will also have some physiological measurements taken, including their heart rate.

The event will be given an added touch of excitement in the form of attendance by Liverpool’s renowned jockey Franny Norton and the city’s boxing champion Derry Mathews, as well as Olympic Sailor Matt McGovern.

In the afternoon sessions, guests can then participate in presentations given by world-leading authorities on the benefits of a preventive health approach in exercise and life in general. A highlight from Monday’s afternoon session will be Dr George Wilson discussing the effects of weight-making strategies on jockeys and how to move beyond negative practices.  He will be joined by The Stroke Association who further back advocating a preventive health approach.

The afternoon of Tuesday 4th April will provide a unique insight into horse health, and specialist equine vets from the University of Liverpool’s Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital will join the sports scientists at Liverpool John Moores University to provide the equine health perspective.  Professor Cathy McGowan, who will investigate equine excellence in racing and the increasing use of blood tests in training horses, will be joined by Harry Carslake, discussing why clean air and lungs are crucial for performance, and representatives from equine feed specialists Dodson & Horrell.

Professor Cathy McGowan, Head of Department of Equine Clinical Science and Director of Veterinary Postgraduate Education at the University of Liverpool’s Equine Hospital, commented;

“The racehorse is one of the finest athletes on the planet with a highly specialised physiology to enable it to perform at such high levels. We will be focussing on highlighting that unique physiology and also how understanding that is used to monitor and maximise the health of these equine athletes.

“We are delighted to be involved with Randox Health in providing these educational seminars at LJMU as well as at the Aintree Grand National on Friday and proud to be supporting Randox’s involvement in equine and human health.”

Wednesday afternoon of Randox Health Week will feature a topic that can lead to devastating consequences – the impacts of training on artery health and early detection of cardiovascular disease in humans.

Dr Peter FitzGerald, CEO of Randox said:

“We are delighted to be teaming up with Liverpool John Moores University as part of Randox Health Week ahead of the Randox Health Grand National. With over 34 years’ experience in the diagnostics industry we have developed innovative and accurate technology for use in humans that reveals our current and future health. Our equine panel is able to assess the impact of training on endurance racehorses to increase their performance and well-being. The Grand National offers us the perfect platform to spread our message of preventive health for people and horses, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge with the audiences at this exciting event.”

Professor David Richardson, Director of the LJMU School of Sport and Exercise Sciences commented:

“The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is delighted to be working with Randox.  Our research has already had a major impact on the health and wellbeing of jockeys and reduced the occupational risk of race riding not only in the UK but throughout the world. The workshops are intended to raise the students’ understanding of these appropriate training protocols and techniques associated to horse riding and different sports at an elite level and the aligned health benefits.”

There will also be a tour of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (RISES), the top ranked institution in the UK for research in sport and exercise sciences* where many elite athletes benefit from world-leading research.
