Novel Biomarkers – Mesothelin
Mesothelin is a protein found on mesothelial cells, which form a protective lining for the lungs, abdomen, and heart. Elevated levels of mesothelin in the blood are associated with mesothelioma, a cancer often caused by asbestos exposure. High levels have also been found in ovarian and gastrointestinal cancers.
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer affecting the lining of the lungs although it can also affect the lining of the tummy, heart or testicles. Its usually linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelin levels in the blood are significantly higher in patients with mesothelioma, making it a valuable biomarker for diagnosing this asbestos-related cancer.
Mesothelioma is almost always liked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma typically develops more than 20 years after exposure to asbestos.
Other Applications
Ovarian Cancer: Elevated mesothelin levels in the blood can help distinguish ovarian cancer from benign ovarian conditions. When combined with CA125, mesothelin can improve detection of ovarian cancer in post-menopausal women.
Gastrointestinal Cancers: Mesothelin levels may be increased in gastrointestinal cancers such as colorectal, pancreatic, and gastric cancers.
