Céline skydives into fundraising for AWARE NI

We’re passionate about celebrating the kindness and generosity of our Randox employees. Each have their own unique and interesting story to tell and many give up their spare time to support their local community and help those in need.

Their compassion and commitment is what makes Randox the successful company it is today, and this month Customer Relationship Executive, Céline Hasson, emulated this perfectly, with an adrenaline-filled display of bravery and dedication!

On Sunday 3rd November, Céline took to the skies for a charity skydive, in aid of our 2018/2019 charity partner, AWARE NI.

Below Céline explains why she wanted to take part in the charity skydive, and what it meant to her to be able to raise funds for the main depression charity for Northern Ireland.

Céline Hasson, Customer Relationship Executive, said;

“People with mental health conditions deserve as much support and compassion as those will physical health conditions. So with this in mind, back in May I signed myself up for a skydive, with a goal to fundraise £500+ for AWARE NI.

“Unfortunately the weather was against us on a number of the occasions we had previously planned to Skydive, but we got there in the end and were able to complete the challenge in November.

“I’m sure every person reading this has either suffered or knows someone who has/is suffering from depression, so please donate to a great cause like AWARE NI. Let’s support them to help support others.”

Did you know?

– 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem each year

– Anxiety and depression are the most common mental disorders

– Overall prevalence of mental health conditions in Northern Ireland is up to 25% higher than in England

– 9 out of 10 people with mental health problems experience stigma and discrimination

What can you do?

Whilst Céline committed to a skydive with Moonjumpers Sky Diving, you have the easy part.

Simply make a donation and contribute to the very worthy AWARE NI, which has an established network of 24 support groups in rural and urban areas across the county, and also delivers mental health and well-being programmes into communities, schools, colleges, universities and workplaces.

Randox Charity Partners 2019/20 Announced

Global healthcare company Randox Laboratories has today announced Liverpool-based charity the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation, located near its Liverpool Randox Health clinic,  and Townland Boxing Club, near its Crumlin headquarters in Northern Ireland, as its official charity partners for 2019/2020.

Randox staff in the UK and Ireland will be fundraising for these causes through a range of events and initiatives throughout the year, including individual staff fundraising activities and the company’s popular Christmas Raffle for staff in December.

Randox Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Peter FitzGerald, commented;

“We are delighted to partner with the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation in Liverpool and Townland Boxing Club in Glenavy. Both are very worthy causes close to the hearts of those living near two of our health check clinics – Randox Health Liverpool in Exchange Station and Randox Health Crumlin in Northern Ireland.

“Our partnerships with each of these charities focus on the health and wellbeing, in particular, of young people. You are never too young to start caring about your health and thinking of your future wellbeing.

“Indeed, our research and development teams have found that signs of ill-health often appear in the body at an early age but symptoms may not appear until later in life. It is paramount that the health of young people is prioritised at the earliest stage and when preventable illnesses and conditions can be stopped in their tracks or more effectively managed.”

Frank Cogley, father of Tim and founder of the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation, commented;

“The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation is dedicated to providing free cardiac screenings and education for young adults in Merseyside and the Wirral. The essence of the charity, and its whole approach of reaching out to help others, reflects Tim’s character and, in that sense, keeps alive his driving force. I can’t imagine a legacy more in tune with the generous, kind and supportive person that was Tim.”

Tim Cogley, an apparently fit and healthy 34-year-old from Heswall, England, suffered a fatal heart attack in April 2017. Despite showing no symptoms, Tim had a 75% cholesterol blockage of the left descending coronary artery. The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation was set up by family and friends in Tim’s memory to offer free heart screening to those aged 18 to 40 within the Merseyside area, an age range where little heart screening currently is offered.

Frank continued;

“We have enjoyed a close working relationship with Randox Health Liverpool since our inception in 2017 and are thrilled to have been chosen as one of the company’s staff charity partners.

“The money raised by Randox staff will help provide cardiac screenings and facilitate a range of educational programmes which, by sharing Tim’s story, will illustrate the need to be aware of key health indicators from a young age.

“Making young people aware of their vital signs, such as blood pressure, will go a long way in preventing future young deaths from preventable heart conditions, and we look forward to delivering this message with the help of staff from Randox Health.”

In addition to cardiac screening programmes, the Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation is committed to delivering positive, action-focused and life-changing educational sessions which focus on delivering information lifestyle changes which can have positive benefits for young people.

Randox Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Peter FitzGerald, said;

“The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation has already made a difference to young people in the Liverpool area both with the detection of early cardiac issues through its free screening programme and in its education endeavours. The story of Tim Cogley is a tragic one of a life ended too soon. The courage and commitment of his family to create a positive legacy in his name is to be admired and we look forward to joining with them through this Randox staff charity partnership.”

Randox’s second charity partner, Townland Boxing Club in Glenavy, was founded in 2008 by a group of dedicated people interested in the sport of boxing and improving youth facilities in the area.

The amateur boxing club, which is a completely voluntary organisation, was opened with a purpose to give young people in the area a place to meet, form friendships and learn the discipline, respect and skill required to become an amateur boxer.

Thomas Quinn, head coach at Townland Boxing Club, said;

“Randox is a key employer in the area with tremendous influence and we look forward to partnering with them as we continue to bring boxing facilities and training to young people in the wider Glenavy area. From the admin staff to coaches, everyone here works on a voluntary basis and we rely on the generosity of others, such as Randox, to keep our services continuing for generations to come.”

Randox Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Peter FitzGerald, said;

“Randox’s global headquarters has been based in Crumlin since the company was founded in 1982. We are proud to hold longstanding relationships with the local community here and our new staff charity partnership with Townland Boxing Club in Glenavy signals our continued commitment to the wellbeing of Crumlin and the surrounding area.”

Randox staff raise over £14,000 for mental health charity partners AWARE and Mind Your Mood

Global healthcare company Randox Laboratories has today announced that staff have raised over £14,000 for mental health charity partners AWARE NI and Mind Your Mood, during 2018 and 2019.

AWARE NI is the depression charity for Northern Ireland with an established network of 24 support groups in rural and urban areas across the country. They also deliver mental health and wellbeing programmes into communities, schools, colleges, universities and workplaces. Mind Your Mood is an initiative designed and managed by students at Ulster University to help break down the stigma of mental health and encourage students to access support.

Dr. Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director and Founder of Randox Laboratories, commented:

“There is no doubt that mental health issues are a major concern within our society and the vigour with which staff at Randox have fundraised for AWARE NI and Mind Your Mood, two causes close to everybody’s hearts, is to be commended.

“Randox staff across all areas – from Science to Engineering and Business to Manufacturing –  have raised a substantial sum for our two charity partners and we hope that this figure will aid awareness of mental health and contribute to the help given to those suffering in Northern Ireland.”

The partnership, which was announced in July 2018, kicked off with the annual Randox Fest staff BBQ in August where 400 staff members had the opportunity to participate in a football tournament, tug-of-war and rounders. Talented musicians amongst Team Randox even took to the stage to bring live music to the festivities.

Throughout the year, Randox staff continued to enthusiastically support AWARE and Mind Your Mood. In October 2018, Randox hosted a company-wide Mental Health Month which saw various divisions take part in a fundraising coffee morning in Randox Health’s clinic in Holywood, a Wear Yellow Day across all of Randox’s NI sites, a daring abseil from the dome of Victoria Square Belfast and a fundraising bake sale for staff members.

The Randox Gaelic Football team also fundraised for the charities with their participation in an Interfirm Tournament in November 2018, while the annual Randox Christmas Raffle in December 2018 was once again popular as staff members vied for top prizes of a 55” Sony smart TV, an extra day of annual leave and tickets to the world-renowned Randox Health Grand National. Children of Randox staff also enjoyed a visit from another famous and festive figure in a red suit at this yearly family event in the staff calendar.

Clare Galbraith, Corporate Fundraising Officer for AWARE, commented:

“We have thoroughly enjoying working with Randox over the past year and are incredibly grateful to Randox staff for their hard work and perseverance in achieving this tremendous amount of fundraising.

“The vital work of AWARE is funded primarily by donations and without the generosity of people like those at Randox, we would not be able to provide the services we do to those living with depression and bipolar disorder in Northern Ireland.”

The new year in 2019 saw Randox staff taking part in a charity golf day at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, Belfast City Marathon and another abseil, this time from the top of Cave Hill’s most iconic landmark, Belfast Castle. Two brave staff members have also volunteered to scale the heights in a 10,000ft skydive in Garvagh which will take place later in the year.

Randox fundraising for AWARE NI and Mind Your Mood came to an end with AWARE NI’s Dragon Boat race on the River Lagan at the end of June 2019. Two Randox boats competed against 12 others in a race against the clock, with one Team Randox boat reaching the semi-final of the event.

Eddie Friel, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Ulster University said:

“Ulster University and Randox have a long-standing partnership built around research, knowledge, sharing, collaboration and student opportunity. This generous sum raised by Randox staff will go a long way in helping to support the mental health activity taking place at our four campuses through the Mind Your Mood initiative.”

Over £14,000 was raised, £10,826 of which was for AWARE NI-related activities and £3,270 for Mind Your Mood.

We Are Randox | ‘Tis the Season of Giving at the Christmas Raffle 2018

This year our much-anticipated Christmas Raffle took place on Monday 24th December 2018, in aid of our official charity partners, AWARE NI and Mind Your Mood.

The main depression charity for Northern Ireland, AWARE has an established network of 24 support groups in rural and urban areas across the country, and also delivers mental health and well-being programmes into communities, schools, colleges, universities and workplaces.  Mind Your Mood is an initiative designed and managed by students at Ulster University to help break down the stigma of mental health and encourage students to access support.

Did you know that the prevalence of mental health conditions in Northern Ireland is up to 25% higher than in England, with anxiety and depression being the most common mental disorders? We’re proud therefore to be supporting both AWARE and Mind Your Mood with a range of fundraising initiatives this year, including now the Randox Christmas Raffle 2018, at which, we are delighted to announce, we raised more than £2500 – with the official total still to be counted!

Congratulations to all our prize winners from this year’s Christmas Raffle, and in particular to the lucky winners of our most coveted prizes – a 55″ Ultra HD 4K Sony Bravia TV and an extra day of annual leave!

Congratulations to Emma Forsythe and Jayne Russell on receiving these prizes.

 Thanks again everyone for all your support with the 2018 Randox Christmas Raffle – to our dedicated Internal Comms team who organised the event, to Chloe Young from Mind Your Mood for joining us and helping us see where our money would be going, and of course to everyone who bought a ticket!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you again in 2019.

Randox launches Mental Health & Wellbeing Month

Randox Health Holywood is this week hosting a fundraising event for mental health charities AWARE NI and Ulster University’s Mind Your Mood to launch Randox’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Month throughout October.

Held on Saturday 6th October 2018, 10am – 12noon, the health check company’s coffee morning event will offer customers, visitors and the residents of Holywood the opportunity to call in, grab a tea or coffee, and sample some scones and sweet treats, all while helping to raise money for those who need it most.

By shining a light on mental health issues, Randox hopes to educate its staff on how to look after their mental health while also raising funds for its two official charity partners. The fundraising coffee morning launches a month of staff initiatives including a Wear Yellow for World Mental Health Day on Wednesday 10th October, a company-wide Bake Sale on Friday 26th October, and a freefall abseil from the dome of Victoria Square Belfast on Sunday 21st October.

Randox Founder and Managing Director, Dr Peter FitzGerald, commented;

“Every one of us has been touched either directly or indirectly by these issues and it’s something we at Randox wish to help to address. We have for example invested significantly in research that will determine how problems with the digestive system can affect your mood, sleep and stress levels. We hope that our partnerships not only help those affected by mental ill-health across Northern Ireland, but also empower our Randox staff to take care of their own mental well-being.”

AWARE NI is the depression charity for Northern Ireland with an established network of 23 support groups in rural and urban areas across the country, all run by trained volunteers. AWARE deliver mental health and wellbeing programmes in to communities, schools, colleges, universities and workplaces while also running a 24hr email help service.

Mind Your Mood, managed by Ulster University, is designed and delivered by students who have life experience of mental health illness to help other students avoid mental illness, provide support at the earliest point, build awareness of mental illness and provide support to students who are already diagnosed with mental illness.

Randox announces mental health charities AWARE and Mind Your Mood as Official Charity Partners

Global healthcare company Randox Laboratories has today announced mental health charities AWARE and Mind Your Mood as its official charity partners for 2018/2019.

Randox will be fundraising for the charities through a range of events and initiatives throughout the year, including individual staff fundraising activities, the company’s annual staff fun day, Randox Fest, and its popular Christmas Raffle.

Randox Founder and Managing Director, Dr Peter FitzGerald, commented;

“Mindful of the significant impact of mental health issues on society, we are today announcing AWARE and Mind Your Mood as our charity partners for the year. Every one of us has been touched either directly or indirectly by these issues and it’s something we at Randox wish to help to address. We have for example invested significantly in research that will determine how problems with the digestive system can affect your mood, sleep and stress levels. We hope that our partnerships not only help those affected by mental ill-health across Northern Ireland, but also empower our Randox staff to take care of their own mental well-being.”

In addition to supporting AWARE and Mind Your Mood with fundraising events throughout the year, Randox has also committed to delivering mental health awareness sessions and mindfulness activities to its staff.

Inclusive of the introduction of the Mood Matters Workplace Programme, and the provision of dedicated Mental Health Mentors, Randox hopes to encourage staff to effectively manage their feelings when they’re stressed, worried or depressed, learn simple practical skills to help cope with their own challenges, and support their colleagues with theirs.

Clare Galbraith, Corporate Fundraising Officer for AWARE, commented;

“We’re delighted to have Randox on board as one of our official corporate fundraising partners this year. As a key employer in Northern Ireland with tremendous influence, the company has real potential to transform how we look at mental health and wellbeing, particularly in the workplace setting. We look forward to seeing the creative fundraising ideas they have planned for the year ahead and thank them for all their support thus far.”

Amanda Castray, Director of Campus Life, Ulster University said,

“Ulster University and Randox enjoy a longstanding partnership built around research, knowledge sharing, collaboration and student opportunity which reflects the leadership of both organisations in diagnostics and health research globally. We are very encouraged that one of our valued industry partners is now supporting us with our student-led mental health programme, Mind Your Mood. We look forward to working with the team at Randox as we promote positive mental health and wellbeing across our campuses and tackle the social stigmas associated with seeking support.”

As part of Randox’s focus this year on mental health and wellbeing, the global healthcare company will also be offering Ulster University students a discount on its revolutionary health checks for the duration of the partnership.

These health programmes are designed to find indicators of physical or mental ill-being at the earliest possible stage, to allow preventive action or treatment to be taken.

We Are Randox | Christmas Raffle raises £4030 for Cancer Fund for Children

This year our much-anticipated Christmas Raffle took place on Friday 22nd December 2017, in aid of Cancer Fund for Children.

Every week in Northern Ireland, another three children, teenagers or young adults, aged between 0 and 24 years old, are diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer Fund for Children helps families cope with the impact cancer has on their lives, and they support them through life, both during and after treatment, by offering a range of free short breaks for families coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis.

We’re delighted to let you all know that we raised a mammoth £4030 from this year’s Christmas Raffle. This money will go a long way in providing families dealing with cancer in Northern Ireland the opportunity to relax far away from the pressures of gruelling cancer treatment and hospital visits.

Congratulations to all our prize winners from this year’s Christmas Raffle, and in particular to the winners of our most coveted prizes – a 55″ Ultra HD 4K Curved Samsung TV, and an extra day of annual leave!

 Congratulations to Ian Moore and to Sarah Savage on receiving these prizes.

 Thanks again everyone for all your support with the Christmas Raffle – to our Internal Comms team who organised the event, to Andy from Cancer Fund for Children for joining us and helping us see where our money would be going, and of course to everyone who bought a ticket!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We Are Randox | Michelle Bradley crowned winner of the Great Randox Bake Off 2017

It was Friday Fun Day (or should we say Bun Day?) for everyone at Randox headquarters today!

In aid of the Stroke Association NI, talented bakers from across the company brought in their cakes, biscuits, buns and sweet treats to enter in to the Great Randox Bake Off 2017.

With an impressive line-up of chocolate brownies, Victoria sponges, rainbow cakes and more, the competition was fierce for the fifteen Randox bakers who offered up their home-baked goods to the strict judging panel.

Randox Health Director, Nuailin FitzGerald; Nuailin’s daughter Angharad; Randox Receptionist and Administrator Teresa McCloskey, and Stroke Association representative Paul Montgomery, made up the team of judges who rated each bake out of 10 for both appearance and taste (it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it, right?)

While the judges made their notes, a large group of Randox employees waited eagerly to hear who would be crowned Randox Star Baker.

Would it be Rachel Walls’ Biochip Cake?

Michael Mulligan’s Swampy Magenta Banoffee Pie?

Or would Grace Catney win with her We Are Randox cupcakes?

The judges then took themselves off to the private judging room where they deliberated on who would receive the coveted prize, while everyone else was able to finally taste all the wonderful treats on display!

To sample the goodies everyone gave generously to the Stroke Association donation bucket and while doing so made their own predictions as to who would win.

But only the judges had the deciding vote…

In third place, was Rachel Withers’ Make May Purple themed meringue cake.

In joint second place – Nicola McHugh’s Rainbow Cake and Clare McKibben’s beautifully iced Randox cake!

The winner of the Great Randox Bake Off 2017 was…Michelle Bradley!

Michelle’s perfectly smooth icing and ornate flower decorations really wowed the judges, and they were equally impressed when they tasted the light and delicious sponge inside.

Congratulations Michelle!

A big thank you to everyone who donated today at our Great Randox Bake Off, and for taking the time to sample the entrants’ baked goods.  Weren’t they tasty?

Of course a huge thank you also goes to the judges of our Great Randox Bake Off, and in particular to Paul Montgomery for taking the time to visit Randox and speak to our team about the importance of stroke awareness.

We all learnt a lot and had fun while doing so!

For more information on the Great Randox Bake Off email the Randox PR team: randoxpr@randox.com or phone 028 9442 2413
